Flannery 2D

Shows 11-15 HCPs with 4 Spades and 5 Hearts which is usually difficult to show since bidding Spades after opening Hearts is a Reverse showing 16+ HCPs.

Having well described his hand, partner is now able to set a contract based on the strength and distribution of his hand.

    2, 3, 4, 4 and 3N are all sign-offs.

    Other 3-level bids are invitational.

2N is strong and asks opener to describe his minor suit holdings as follows:

    • 3 = 4=5=1=3
    • 3 = 4=5=3=1
    • 3 = 4=5=2=2 with a minimum
    • 3 = 4=5=2=2 with a maximum
    • 3N = 4=5=2=2 with stoppers in both minors
    • 4 = 4=5=0=4
    • 4 = 4=5=4=0

It should be noted that Flannery may not be needed when playing 2/1 Forcing. If responder makes a 2/1 bid, game force is already on and bidding 1 after opening 1 can optionally be used to show shape rather than extra strength.

In Competition

Flannery responses are on when possible.
